It has been a privilege to serve as the Vice President of CCAS for the past two years. I have been involved with the CCAS for many years and have enjoyed being a part of several special interest groups, committees, CCAS program chair 2016 and the board of directors. The strength of CCAS is its membership. We have members who are very committed to caring for patients with congenital hearts disease. These members are all colleagues, and many have become good friends. Together we can improve the future for patients with congenital heart disease. Now during COVID-19 we need CCAS to network with and support each other. I hope I can help navigate CCAS through these challenging times and build an even stronger community within the membership.

- I am currently the Editor of the CCAS Newsletter and Chair of the Communication Committee. I initiated the question of the week and poll of the month for the CCAS website in 2014 and wrote the weekly questions for two years with the explanation and references. In the first year this initiative was credited with tripling the number of website visits. I continue to be actively engaged in reviewing and editing the questions.
I led a working group within the communication committee to revise the website of the Society and launched the new website this past summer with new features and content.
I led the effort to create milestones for Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia training; these milestones were subsequently published in Anesthesia & Analgesia. I have been the CCAS representative on the SPA GME task force aiming to evaluate the current status of the pediatric cardiac anesthesia fellowships across the US. This culminated in the creation of a working group and submission of a proposal to ACGME for standardization of the pediatric cardiac anesthesia fellowship. - Finally, I organized the creation of the CCAS Special Interest Trainee group and serve as a mentor to this group. This is a group currently led by fellows and residents interested in pediatric cardiac anesthesia training and careers.
- Additional roles:
- Member of the CCAS Membership Recruitment, Retention and Engagement Committee
- Member of the Steering committee of the Cardiac Mentoring Initiative for fellows and junior faculty
- Regularly participated as a speaker, moderator and problem-based learning discussion leader at the CCAS annual meeting over the past 5 years

Prior involvement with CCAS or SPA (Board, Committee, etc) (if applicable) – please provide a brief description of these activities.
- I attended my first CCAS meeting as a CA-2 in 2010. Since then, I have had the opportunity to lead Roundtable Discussions, moderate educational sessions, speak at educational meetings, and present original research during the Oral Abstract Presentations at the Annual CCAS Meeting.
- I joined the CCAS Hemostasis Interest Group (HIG) as one of the original members 2015. Since then, our membership has grown from 5 clinicians to a network of cardiac anesthesiologists from over 20 institutions. Due to the small heterogenous population of pediatric cardiac patients presenting to single institutions, large, high quality studies in pediatric cardiac transfusion medicine are challenging. However, this multi-institutional collaboration has led to several abstracts and publications that aim to define differences in clinical practices across institutions.
- My membership in HIG complements my involvement on the SPA Patient Blood Management Committee. As part of the SPA PBM Special Interest Group, members are invited to give workshops and lectures on transfusion related topics at meetings throughout the year. This year members have presented at the SPA Annual Meeting, the Society for the Advancement of Blood Management, and the Boston Children’s Annual Meeting on the Principles of Pediatric Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine.
- In 2019, I received the SPA Young Investigator Grant to carry out a randomized clinical trial examining the “In vivo effect of fibrinogen concentrate versus cryoprecipitate on the neonatal fibrin network.” I have been an active member of the SPA Research Committee, including serving as an abstract reviewer and a moderator for poster sessions for the SPA 2020 Annual Meeting. In 2020, I became Chair of the Subcommittee on Surveys. This Subcommittee of the SPA Research Committee reviews and recommends which surveys are submitted to the SPA Board of Directors for approval and member-wide distribution.
- In July 2020, I was asked to serve on the SPA Young Investigator Grant Review Committee. This 8-member committee reviews and discusses the YIG grant submissions to choose 2-3 young researchers to receive this award each year.
- As a member of the CCAS Board of Directors, I hope to promote collaborative relationships across the larger anesthesia community and congenital cardiac specialties to further the mission of the CCAS. I look forward to joining a group of like-minded Congenital Cardiac Anesthesiologists who are dedicated to improving the perioperative care and outcomes for patients with congenital heart disease requiring anesthetic care.
Involvement with other national/international (pediatric) anesthesia organizations (if applicable) – please provide a brief description of organization.
- As a result of my growing expertise in pediatric transfusion medicine, I sit on several national committees focused on pediatric anesthesia, pediatric cardiology, and transfusion medicine. This October, I started my two-year commitment with the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) Patient Blood Management Committee and the ASA Committee on Pediatric Anesthesia (COPA). The Committees focus on updating practice guidelines and consensus statements for transfusion medicine and guidelines for pediatric anesthesiologists.
- In addition to my work with the CCAS and the ASA, I was invited by the Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Consortium PC⁴ to join a workgroup aimed at reducing/preventing thrombotic complications in pediatric. The PC⁴ was formed in 2009 as a unique collaborative of leaders in pediatric cardiac critical care, cardiac surgery, and cardiology representing the diverse group of centers caring for these patients. The PC⁴ aims to improve the quality of care to patients with critical pediatric and congenital cardiovascular disease in North America and abroad through the core pillars of collaborative quality improvement: purposeful collection of specific clinical data on outcomes and practice; timely performance feedback to clinicians, and continuous improvement based on empirical analysis and collaborative learning.

Prior involvement with CCAS or SPA (Board, Committee, etc) (if applicable) – please provide a brief description of these activities
During the last several years, I have attended each SPA/CCAS meeting and have been involved in committees in both organizations focusing primarily on communication and education. As a member of the SPA and CCAS communications committees I have frequently contributed to the SPA newsletter and in 2015 and 2016 I co-wrote the CCAS annual meeting summary for the CCAS newsletter. I have also contributed educational content to CCAS lecture series, Question of the Week, and several review articles available to CCAS members. I am currently working with the rest of the Hemostasis Interest Group on an upcoming manuscript detailing current trends in hemostasis management.
I have been actively involved in the research mission of the CCAS with multiple poster and platform presentations. In 2017 I was selected by the CCAS to present my research at the World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery in Spain and in 2019 I presented my research abstract as well as an invited PBLD at the annual CCAS meeting. I have served as a moderator for the SPA transesophageal echocardiography workshop and was an invited speaker at the 2020 SPA meeting. I have more recently become involved in the meeting planning committee within SPA and served as a shadow for the 2020 meeting. This year, I am excited to be joining the CCAS Virtual Visiting Professor leadership team and I look forward to further developing educational resources for our community.
Involvement with other national/international (pediatric) anesthesia organizations (if applicable) – please provide a brief description of organization
From 2018-2020 I served as a pediatric section editor for Open Anesthesia. In this role I collaborated with my co-editors to produce high quality educational content which is widely used by residents and fellows throughout the US and abroad. My lectures cover a range of basic topics in congenital cardiac anesthesia. In collaboration with SPA, my co-editors and I introduced a series of Ask the Experts podcasts in which we interview prominent SPA members about their areas of expertise. I was fortunate to be able to include in this series interviews with CCAS members Drs. Richard Ing, Annette Schure, and Nina Guzzetta.
